Through the years we have been coming to Yankee Dental, a January yearly conference in Boston. A few years back we took a course where a book was highly recommended. Everything is Marketing by Fred Joyal. I started reading the book with an open mind because I wanted to learn to customize my treatments to what is best for my patients. And I was just curious to see what the book had to say.
The book was written for dentists, which I thought was great. I loved all the advice that he had for dentists and their staff. Real practical stuff, that in some ways you wouldn’t think needs to be said, like “play nice”, my generalization of what he so eloquently says through the many chapters. I didn’t realize it at first, but Fred Joyal is the co-founder of 1800 dentists.

I thought it was all great, but it was the final chapter that resonated with me. I think that’s when I became a fan. It’s in this chapter entitled “Final Thoughts”. Fred tells a baseball story. I don’t want to spoil it for you, you need to get the book and read it for yourself, but the object lesson from the story was priceless.
In the end, it isn’t about how much you made; it’s how you played.
Thank you, Fred, for explaining to me that it’s not always necessary to “win”, but more importantly, its how you played the game that will be remembered.
