Tools for calculating BMI
Tools for calculating BMI

By definition, BMI or Body Mass Index is a measure of relative size based on the mass and height of an individual. As defined in Wiki.
I remember a few years back when I started playing with the idea of losing weight I was reading everything I could on the subject on the internet and I ran across the formula.  I found an online BMI calculator so I typed in my numbers, just for curiosity sake, and the number came back as 33.  Ho hum, whatever.  Then I glanced over and noticed that anything over 30 was considered obese. WHAT?
I remember getting mad at BMI, they had to be wrong.  Obese?  Really?  Couldn’t they pick a better word?
BMI does have its limitations, there are better ways of calculating weight fat percentage.  I remember a number of years back, walking by the Physical Therapy department at Loma Linda University, my alma mater in California, and they had a weight scale set up that would calculate your weight while in the pool.  I’m not sure I understand it as well, but by doing so, I believe you get a much more accurate picture of how much fat is on your frame.
If you want a good approximation, go check out your BMI, are you in the 25+ range?
